Have you ever had a night where you realize that your ears are plugging up and your nose is snotty and you feel that thing (you know the one) in the way-back of your throat? Have you lamented the dishes in the sink and the darks in the dryer, knowing full well that you just didn't have it in you to care?
Have you stood by the desk for a conversation with your husband, but over the course of the next sixty seconds did you find yourself sitting on the carpet, then laying on the carpet, then crying on the carpet?
You have?
Have you kicked yourself for saying no to a Polly Pocket cruise in the Barbie jeep? Have you felt the wind whip your thinning hair as you cruised full-throttle down and over the hill?
Have you wanted a make-over? A sleep-over? A take-over?
Have you wished for a do-over?
Me, too.
Here's what you do. You wake up (with puffy eyes) and you do the dang thing over. But with a twist.
You stack the deck in your favor, because when you're outnumbered by small people, you're the only one who can.
You think hard about the best case scenario. You understand that most things are not in your control. You know you're still the Boss, so you can't very well run off to the Bobbi Brown counter at Macy's. Not just yet. You can't lock the bedroom door and get lost in The Language of Flowers.
But you can spring for $1.07 of carbonated happiness then take a detour past the park. (Bonus! Your friends are there and they pretend not to notice that you look like you just rolled out of bed and into a hot mess.)
You can change the entire course of the Universe with 2 dollar-bin spray bottles.
You can choose to let a potty training "incident" (a repeat offender, but who's keeping score?) roll right off your back.
Listen, you can't go out for hot dogs. You just can't. You did that last night and no one wants to be that girl. But you can find last minute inspiration and cheap asparagus and make an on-the-fly Nicoise Cobb.
(You can choose to let it go when you realize while you're typing a blog post that you forget to add the kalamatas.)
You can kick-box PMS in the ever-loving teeth and give yourself some grace, because you might not be perfect and the darks might be wrinkled past redemption, but you are still able to see the beauty that is your life.
Today was an ordinary day.
Today was a beautiful, ordinary day.
Don'tcha think?

ordinarily beautiful...
ReplyDelete:) the best kind of beautiful...
Ordinary beautiful is my favourite kind of beautiful, and almost everyday is this kind of day, if I choose to throw out all my unrealistic expectations and frustrations. Hope your ears, nose, throat and any other problematic parts are back under control and you feel 150% soon!
ReplyDeleteLove. Thanks for being awesome.
ReplyDeleteVery nice post! Thanks for the mommy encouragement.
ReplyDelete(Your salad looks scrumptious too!)
full-on awesome Shannan- a-w-e-s-o-m-e!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement. Today was quite the "beautiful, ordinary" day!
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to come eat lunch with you on an ordinary day.
ReplyDeleteRepeat offenders are SUPER cute. Especially with a new spray bottle.
And I love thee.
That is all.
xxoo
OH! Did C get his mail?
Can you break down what was on the delicious looking lunch plate? You my dear are extraordinary!
ReplyDeleteChopped romaine with sliced scallions. "Smashed" potatoes. Roasted asparagus. Roasted grape tomatoes. Avocado. Tuna. Gorganzola. Dijon balsamic vinaigrette.
DeleteSo good!
I need squirt bottles to stage a do over. I can always use a do over;) BTW you need to link up with my feed my family friday thing sometime. You have mad meal skills. I'm just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteI like it! I'm just so thankful that, when we get desperate, we can send everyone outside. I (with my vampire skin) have turned into a summer person. What choice do I have, when I have such wild children, but to love the great outdoors?
ReplyDeleteI have that ouch in the back of my throat tonight. Can't yell at the kids and it's crimping my style something fierce. I sure do hope a good night of sleep fixes whatever ails me...
ReplyDeleteI needed to read this right now, my life certainly is crazy beautiful!
ReplyDeletethat is a gorgeous salad. and i totally need to stage a do-over myself. yesterday was grande. (apparently the kind of grande that earns an e.) today was the pits. granted, i had help, but my poor attitude made it even pittier.
ReplyDeletebut tomorrow! tomorrow is a fresh chance to intentionally love and by golly, i'm-a gonna do it. (well, technically God is going to do it through me, but this time i will move aside and actually let him get to it.)
love this~like always!
ReplyDeleteit is the beauty in the ordinary that allows us to stumble out of bed each morning...isn't it...or perhaps the new mercies. as for fly-by-the-seat dinners, i love asparagus season...100 meals out of one veggie...asparagus and eggs, asparagus cobb salad, steamed asparagus, asparagus wrapped in bacon, and so on...you get the idea.
ReplyDeletehang on my friend hang on.
You are my kind of girl sister!
ReplyDeleteAmen, sister! After the most crazy, stressful, want to crawl under the covers and re-do it kind of days, I realize that....life is so full of the sweet stuff. You just have to taste it.
ReplyDeletei just can't ever get over how many vegetables you eat. i had a little bit of red pepper today. that is all. i need a veggie revolution in my world. teach me your ways.
ReplyDeleteVeggie Revolution (slacker style): Chipotle veggie bowl with grilled veggies, pico, medium salsa, lettuce and guac. Heck, throw the corn on if you want to.
DeleteThis is how I rolled today. I wanted it so bad, I spent $6 of my $40 blow money on it... and it's only the 3rd day of the month. Oy.
You're just neat, you know that? Lets be friends. Thanks for the encouragement!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. It was a messy day, but it was still a good one, filled to the brim. Love your words!! They remind me what I love about my life!
ReplyDeleteand then just take those spray bottles and spritz the darks in the dryer and start it up again...
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha! You got it, sister.
DeleteHEY YOU!
ReplyDeleteYou're grrreat!
That salad plate is making my mouth water at 10:36p.m.
In addition to the spray bottles (which are endlessly fantastic), paint brushes (actual big-people brushes (cheap) ) and water are fun too! Especially with younger ones, when you tell them to "Paint the house" or whatever. They paint the plants, the rocks, the posts. Did I mention this is an outside thing?
Love to you and yours.
Lisa
YES it is all about perspective and attitude.
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest... you pulled me in tonight with the $1.07 "piping cold", regular, not diet, carbonated beverage... I've been avoiding those babies for a couple of weeks now and today was one of those days where I could have really gone for one... ice to the top of the cup, which is my style.
ReplyDelete~Chris
It sounds like a perfect day to me.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely perfect. And then some.
You speak volumes to my soul.....thank you for saying what I feel too tired to do. You've strung the words together so perfectly, so eloquently. I'm at a loss, as I sit here trying to find a publisher for my next book, and the hour is closing in on 11. This is the time the baby sleeps, and so, this is when I try to unearth myself from feeding, changing, burping, and so on. I clean, I cook, I work, all between the twilight hours and sunrise. I could sleep, and I will, but there is something that dwells deeper needing to be fulfilled. Come morning, there will be chubby little hands that need holding, and I will want nothing more than to snuggle with my sweet little man.
ReplyDeleteSo alas, it is now that I am not just Mom. It is now that makes me better for tomorrow.
Good night, and thank you.
Exactly! SAHM of two little ones and I feel ya! It is a beautiful, beautiful life. Not perfect, but beautiful. I read one blog post, ONE! and I am your newest follower. I just know we are going to get along like that ;)
ReplyDeleteWell Hello, Newest Follower! :) Thanks for the shout.
DeleteI really love you.
ReplyDeletePMS and potty training 'incidents' at the same time? God bless you, woman! You're right though, it's all beautiful. Every last crazy minute.
ReplyDeleteGod has given you talent beyond the horizon!keep it up!
ReplyDeleteGreat post and I think I'll choose to have a beautiful, ordinary day.
ReplyDeleteThank you for being the inspiration that you are.
Love and hugs ~ FlowerLady
I just finished The Language of Flowers. Fantastic read. But the whole time I wanted to shout at her..."use your voice! let people know what you are thinking, silly girl!!" She could have avoided so much heartache...
ReplyDeleteAlso, a do-over? Can I have one? Pretty please? Yesterday was decidedly NOT my best day as a mommy/wife/person. Sigh.
And Thursday (I hate to admit it) is McDonalds day for me and my girl. She has a happy meal on the way to dance and I get a big ol' soda. Then after dance, I put her to bed and pop popcorn (the real kind, on the stove) and put a healthy dab of butter and salt on it. Yum-o! My husband always feels bad for playing volleyball on Thursdays, but, secretely, it's my favorite night...
Ha ha! Love that last confession. :)
DeleteThat is a good day. A perfectly ordinarily good day. One that eclipses that kind of non-good day that might have come before it.
ReplyDeleteYou are the queen of do-overs! I often think about these posts when I'm having a bad day--thanks so much for helping us realize we can get back up and do it better tomorrow. But trust me, you need to try some B12. I've had a lot fewer "crying on the carpet" days since I started popping it.
ReplyDeleteWow. What is it with Wednesday? Mine was a whopper too. Is it wrong for me to redeem my horrible day by crawling into bed and watching Downton Abbey? I've been staying up way too late with that Mr. Bates.
ReplyDeleteWell, we were troubled by Ep.1 Season 2. (Just watched last night.) Some of these "story lines" are getting a bit stale... But we shall press on!
DeleteOh noooooooo!!! I have high hopes for Season 2. That Mary makes me crazy. Tell me she makes the right decision. NO! Don't tell me!!!:)
DeleteDownton Abbey (or at least Mr. Bates) can redeem most things. if you run out, try Cranford - Jim Carter and Judy Dench are there too!
Deletei love this post! i could have written it myself for all the do-overs i have to give myself. ugh. such a life as a mama of youngins.
ReplyDeletealso? you are like the QUEEN of awesome lunches! you should never come to my house for lunch. you would not enjoy yourself. this week i did make mango salsa...but that was only because a friend was coming over. soooo, ya. you're good.
Does it help that the salad was dinner??? I'm trying to think of what I had for lunch. Wait for it.... Turkey on wheat with no cheese or nuthin'. Just plain old mustard. With salt & vinegar chips and a pickle on the side.
DeleteAmen and amen. The stuff of this post? Is why I love you and your kitschy, real, grace-filled ways.
ReplyDeleteoh, sister, I'm SO with you!
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I just love how you find the happiness in the ordinary. I too have sat on that floor and cried.
ReplyDeletexo
This could be post-grandparent-let-down syndrome...which is a little troubling as my parents leave in the morning. Maybe we'll sneak a couple of those cute as pie water bottles into the buggy today. Love this post & your writing, as always. And look at all those veggies in lieu of hot dogs! Inspiring, I tell ya!
ReplyDeletePS...we just made the homemade lava lamps I found on your blog and they were a HUGE hit! The boys are calling you PowerPatch Farmgirl. :)
DeleteOh PMS. Why is it that the things that might not ruffle us on an ordinary day seem so dark and ominous when we are hit with the monthly stuff? Totally can relate to having a do-over day lately. Thanks for sharing yours! And you have to stick with Downton Abbey! The last episode of season two makes it worth it all! Although season one is probably still my favorite.
ReplyDeleteboo hiss to PMS.
ReplyDelete38 has been a year of horrible PMS and a boat load of back/hip pain, which makes for more days to do-over than not.
how many times can you tell your family you'd like a do over day?
I might be at 70 X 7.
ordinary beautiful, that's you and why i adore you to bit and bits.
ReplyDeleteamen.
i love this post! did you read ellen's second day? http://handmaderecess.com/2012/05/01/the-beauty-of-your-second-day/
it's transforming me. i know these ideas, but hearing them again, and actually making it happen is refreshment galore.
i hope your friday is laughter and salsa filled. praying for you!
(and really want to chat it up soon!)
xo
How did I almost miss this post? When can I come over for THAT salad with the kalamatas, please? I'm salivating and I just woofed down a 6" subway sub. And of course, it should come as no surprise that even though we don't see each other as often as we'd like, we're still on the same PMS schedule! :)
ReplyDeleteI just love you. Everyone has been there but you describe it so wonderfully, so honestly and so full of hope. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGoodness I loved this post. You. are. great!!!!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog through TLC. I love it. And a $1.07 coke from McD's makes my day!
