We finished his room, with just days to spare before bringing him home.
Be ready - I'm about to show you every blasted detail.
But first, lets revisit his room prior to its rebirth, shall we?

I promise, we'll be quick about it.
"The Corner Room", as it was known, had not been touched in at least 15 years. Or maybe 115. I'm not entirely sure.

As fond as I am of vintage wallpaper, this just didn't feel like the right time or place.

Not even a creative, boyish wall-art display was able to propel the decor to full Silas Potential.

So, the wallpaper had to go. The resulting blank slate was worth the glue-caked fingernails.

The rotted linoleum, well, that was a whole 'nother story.

Long story short...

And I do mean
long story short...

We had ourselves a room fit for a farmboy king.

Of course, I am always of the opinion that the fun is in the details.

The first thing I settled on was the paint color. I truly wish I could share the name with you, but the chip is in the other room and I'm now officially, chronically sleep-deprived, so I dare you to tell me that I should just get up and go find it.
Ahem.
After the paint, the first piece of wall decor I found was the black "S" shown in the first picture, courtesy of
White Flower Farmhouse. (Be prepared to fall in love with everything you see if you click on that link.) I love its contrast against all of the white and green. It set the tone in the swooniest way.

The second thing I found was this shadow box thingy.

I bought it at a flea market. It's some type of an old, metal drawer.

The brilliant Melaine of
My Sweet Savannah sells the vintagey flash cards in her
Etsy shop. (Be prepared to fall in love with everything you see if you click on that link.) (Is it just me, or do you have deja vu, too?)
The cars were also dirt-cheap flea market finds.
This piece might be my favorite thing in the whole room.

What I have not told you about is the feed-sack art atop the dresser.
My Dad was cleaning out the barn a few months back and found that dirty thing, beaten and bruised, wadded up and left to die in a corner. You know your Dad gets you when he asks if you want it.
It is an actual grain sack from the grain elevator in my hometown, Pleasant Hill. It warms my heart right up.
I think it may be my favorite thing in the entire room.

The crib was Calvin's. As was the crib skirt. At this stage of the game I still really didn't have a ton of direction on where the room was going, but I knew the existing crib skirt was free and I had a hunch that white and navy stripes would work with just about anything.

The blanket was also found on Etsy. I am loving the little peeks of yellow.

The blue art cabinet was a game-changer. I found it back in July or August from my dear friends and flea market soul mates,
Rhubarb Reign.
I had not planned on introducing bright blue with the green walls, but I could not possibly help myself.
I hauled it home and it barely fit. Just barely. Serendipitous is what I called it.
It's quite possibly my favorite thing of all.

The items on top came from here, there and everywhere.

If it fit, up it went.

The globe was found at a favorite local haunt,
Home Again.

The curtains are good, old fashioned burlap, via JoAnn's Fabric. I told the fabric cutter lady what I was doing and she didn't even attempt to hide her disgust over burlap curtains.
Nothing revs me up like some fabric cutter disdain.

I ended up putting them only on the large window, as the other two windows are on the strange, squatty wall. I'm not sure if it was the right move, but for me, it works.

I hauled this rocking chair up from the toy room with grand plans to paint it. As the clock ticked, I decided that aqua worked quite perfectly with green, royal blue, red, tan, white, etc... etc... etc...
It's funny how a deadline will change your perspective, but quick.

I struggled and strained over fabric for the seat until I remembered this piece that I had been saving for a rainy day. Fortuitous.
I will never doubt a rainy day purchase again.
Once the crib was set up, I was at an utter loss over what to put on the long stretch of wall above.
Then, I remembered another rainy day purchase...

I found these last year in Charleston, SC.

The colors were perfect and they fit rather well with the farmboy/worker guy non-theme theme.
But mostly, they were free.

Sidenote: This delicious hardware was very recently caked in tens upon twenties of layers of paint. Did you know that you can plunk crusty hardware in a crock pot of soapy water overnight and it will come out looking like this?
It will make your house smell like dirty paint stew, but it is worth it.

So there you have it. A bright, cheery room...

...for a bright, cheery boy.
And he is definitely, positively, without a doubt, my favorite thing in the room.
The room is amazing! Silas is precious!! Love those beautiful eyes. God bless you all!
ReplyDeleteWell done! It's hard to say, my fave is either the rocker or the feed sack. Wait, no, I'm mistaken. My favourite is the cutie with the big brown eyes. : )
ReplyDelete~Andrea~
Ohhh...hello to your sweet little Silas! : ) What a doll! What a room! Great job FPFarmFam...great job! I just love the fabric on the wee rocker.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you and all the sweet memories you're making!
: )
Julie M.
It's beautiful!! I think all the colors work wonderfully well together, and the curtain on just the tall window looks just right (I've had that Joann's fabric-cutter disdain directed at me, too). What a lucky boy to move into such a warm, welcoming room! And no, I didn't know the crock-pot trick; wish I'd known a few years ago, when I did all our crusty old hardware! Now I might have to pry out some door hinges or something, just to try it!
ReplyDeleteIt's so gorgeous! Burlap curtains are absolutely not a mistake. People that work in fabric stores should just cut the fabric and call it a day without making faces.
ReplyDeleteYou have so many great finds in the room, but I have to say I love the grain sack too. It's just perfect.
Welcome home Silas!
ok. that is just fantastically gorgeous. it makes me sad how ugly my kids rooms are. lol. they were cute at one time but my kids junk it up in the worst way so i give up trying to be pottery barn mom:) although i must say that you must get up and go look for the paint chip. i love that color.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh!!! It is perfect! I love every little bit. You just need to have a complete home tour. I love all your finds. And, the best part is that adorable smile!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
The room is delightful and will be the perfect spot for Silas to learn all about life and love. You did an amazing job my dear.
ReplyDeleteCheers~

And the feedsack- that's amazing that you not only get a feedsack- but having its history be so connected to you- that's even better. Is the paint possibly "Fernwood Green" By Benjamin Moore? I have that in three rooms at home!
ReplyDeleteChristyn
I love your blog. I love the way you write and your sense of style. Just this morning, on my run, your blog popped into mind. "Does she write off the cuff?" I thought. "Or does she spend a long time crafting her posts?" :)
ReplyDeleteSilas' room is adorable. He is such a cutie too. My husband and I would like to adopt someday (we're giving it some time, since we just got married 9 months ago), and your story is very encouraging.
Thanks for your blog!
oh my he melts your heart just like your other two beautiful babies. The room is darling BUT now it is time to update your About Me side part no more waiting for that little one to come home from Korea. nancy settel sheepishgrin92@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteLOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it! The color is absolutely PERFECTION and all of the details work so gorgeously together. And HE is even more gorgeous - CONGRATS!
ReplyDeleteI love it I love it I love it. Congratulations on finishing it! I think my favorite parts are the blue dresser/shelf thingy, the burlap curtains (so brave, and so wonderful -- even in the face of a disgusted JoAnn's worker!), and the rocking chair. I LOVE the color of the rocking chair, I hope you never change it.
ReplyDeleteOh, but let's be honest, the best part of the room is the little boy who is now in it. Silas is a little dollie.
First, your little boy is beautiful! Second, I'm blown away by the room. It's lovely. I really like everything about it and I like how it's not all matchy-matchy. I think it's great!

In colour therapy, green is the colour of healing and growth. It’s calming and restful and brings balance to the soul......it’s also a lucky colour!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I'm sure it's a room that Silas will love growing up in. And I'm so with you on the caked fingernails thing. I live in an old wallpapery house too. Sigh. But posts like these help motivate me!
ReplyDeleteThanks!

a wonderful room filled with love before he ever came in the door...and while we admire all the work and effort and creativity that you put in it (and the great art center from Rhubarb)he doesn't have a clue and just loves being loved...by you! CONGRATULATIONS!
ReplyDeleteWhen you get a moment, I'd love to know the paint color :) Not a dare :) We are about to embark on painting a room again and I have been picturing a room almost exactly like this! White on bottom and sea green/lime on top!

ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful job you've done pulling it together! Silas is just as sweet as can be - what 'precious moments' eyes he has!
ReplyDeleteI love seeing this room come together and all the steps you took to make it happen. It give me hope that rainy day purchases ARE so worth it (Self: Just buy the darn lamp for 7.50 you'll USE it I promise). It's also encouraging that I am not the only one that thinks that burlap is a fabulous curtain find! My sister must hang out with the JoAnn fabric lady and gawfaw about how ridiculous we are hanging garden cover as curtains! I mean really!?
ReplyDeleteyour corner room becomes the center of your
ReplyDeleteworld! love your non-theme theme and fabric

WOW! I love this room...so personal, creative, colorful and FUN! What a wonderful place for a sweet little boy. Adoption is near and dear to my heart. I am the mother of a sweet little girl from Guatemala. I read through several of your adoption posts and your March 19th post really struck me and brought tears to my eyes. Our daughter's first night with me was really something...she truly loved her foster family so very much and they loved her...I will never forget that day/night...so, so many tears. There were so many mixed emotions that day...joy, sadness, excitement, fear, etc. etc. Our bond and love has grown stronger day by day. May God bless your family as you grow together in love.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. Your room re-do is inspiring!! Great job. I love it.
ReplyDeleteWell slap me and call me Betty. THAT is a GORGEOUS room. And what a precious son to go in it! One of my best friends named her most recent son Silas (he's one of five kids), and your Silas is the only other one I've ever "known"! Beautiful room, beautiful family. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteStriking and happy! Sweet dreams, little one.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Love the farm theme- different and very creative! Such a great room!
ReplyDeletewhat did they use for the back of the ticking stripe blanket? or do you know the etsy store where you bought it?
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeus! Congratulations! I've had some bad JoAnn's experiences as well. I do everything I can to not go back there. Really, only when I don't find anywhere else what I want then I try JoAnn's. But I prepared myself to go there and be mistreated. Sad. Sad.
